Reflections on “About Power in Nursing”
Mary Schira

During a conversation with members of the Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) Special Interest Group (SIG) at the ANNA National Symposium in Chicago, the discussion turned to the challenges facing nurses who provide care to patients on PD. The number of patients choosing PD as a treatment modality was decreasing and the many challenges facing the PD subspecialty within nephrology nursing seemed to be increasing. With the nursing shortage in full swing, the need was high for PD nurses to work together and pool resources and approaches and the need to continue building the knowledge and skills of both new and experienced PD nurses. At the same time, the challenges facing the PD SIG members to meet the needs of nurses and empower them to provide high quality care to patients on PD were numerous and set within the context of not only nephrology nursing but nursing as a whole.
