Hypertension:
Hot Topics is an excellent reference for anyone working with patients
with hypertension. The chapter authors are all experts in their fields.
The book is divided into nine sections with specific chapters for each
section. For example, the first sections deal with a variety of aspects
for the evaluation of hypertension. Chapter examples are home blood
pressure monitoring, microalbuminuria, and peripheral vascular disease.
The lifestyle section includes diet, physical activity, obesity,
depression, and behavioral approaches. The special populations’ section
addresses adolescents, pregnancy, surgical patients, African Americans,
and women. Medical therapy sections include specifics on managing
hypertension in metabolic syndrome, isolated systolic hypertension,
congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, transplant patients,
and sexual dysfunction. These are only a sampling of the topics this
book covers.
Chapters are easy to read, have useful algorithms and charts, and use
highlighted Key Point tables. Reference lists for each chapter are
broad based and current. This book serves the dual purpose of
clarifying physiologic points and providing sound patient management
and teaching. Although its focus is not nephrology, much of the
information pertains to all aspects of that patient population. For the
price, this book is a must-have bargain. Deborah Brooks, MSN, RN, APN, CNN
