This
handbook has been written to provide nephrology caregivers with the
latest information on the care of critically ill patients. The content
is organized into four main categories. Stabilization includes
information on airways, breathing and circulation. The section called
Optimization covers acid-base balance, electrolyte balances, edema,
nutrition, and transplantation. Approaches, outcomes and prognosis are
included under Acute Renal Failure and the section on Renal Replacement
Therapy gives indications and modalities for treatment.
Throughout
the book, there are tables for items such as signs and symptoms of
hyponatremia, generation of metabolic alkalosis, and causes and
treatment of hyper- and hypokalemia. There are also figures for various
algorithms, worksheets, and sample physician orders. Each section of
the book is organized into definition, demographics, symptoms,
mechanisms, causes, diagnosis, and treatment of various conditions. The
section on acute renal failure covers etiology, stages and all aspects
of care. Hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and CRRT techniques are
covered as well as anti-coagulation and vascular access.
This
book is easy to read, is well referenced, and would be an excellent
resource for anyone involved in the care of critically ill renal
patients.
