Certifications Offered by the NNCC
Helen F. Williams
Q:
I am interested in obtaining certification through the Nephrology
Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC). How can I determine which of
the NNCC examinations I should take?
A: There
are currently three examinations for registered nurses. The eligibility
criteria for each examination are outlined in Table 1. The Certified
Dialysis Nurse examination may be taken by nurses who do not have a
license in the United States. In addition, the International Certified
Dialysis Nurse Examination is offered for nurses who have been educated
in and practice outside the United States.
Q: Does the NNCC offer any other examinations?
A:
Yes, the NNCC also offers a patient care hemodialysis technician
examination, which tests for entry level competency. Six months of
clinical experience is recommended and there are four eligibility
requirements. Applicants must: 1) have a high school diploma or GED; 2)
have completed training as an HD patient care technician with both
classroom instruction and supervised clinical practice; 3) provide a
preceptor or supervisor’s signature verifying training and work
experience; and 4) be in compliance with state regulations and meet the
experience requirement for certification for the state in which they
practice.
